THE GREAT COMMISSION

Jesus is telling the disciples what their job is.

            Text: Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

            Baptizing = Greek bäp-tē'-zō

             1. To dip repeatedly, to immerse, to submerge.

            2. To cleanse by dipping or submerging, to wash, to make clean with water, to wash one's self, bathe.

            Name= Greek o'-no-mä

            The name is used for everything which the name covers, everything the thought or feeling of which is aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing, remembering, the name, i.e. for one's rank, authority, interests, pleasure, command, excellences, deeds etc.

            This verse is not referring to three individuals. Instead it is referring to three baptisms.

            Baptism into the body of Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:13.

            Baptism in water. Acts 2:38, 8:16, 10:48, 19:5, Romans 6:4, Colossians 2:4.

            Baptism in the Holy Ghost. Mark 1:8, Acts 1:5,

Purpose of baptizing

            1 Peter 3:21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

            Is this water baptism or baptizing into the body of Christ?

Baptism and cup is an experience or event.

            Matthew 20:22-23 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him,

            We are able. And he saith unto them; Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.

            The word baptism sometimes is used in the same way as Jesus used the word CUP.

             Matthew 26:39 And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

            Acts 10:47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

                        Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

Teach all nations. Teach them what?

Baptizing them;

Name of the Father.

Baptized into the body of Christ. (This is when you get saved.)

            1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

            Galatians 3:27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Name of the Son.

             Water baptism. Acts 2:38, 8:16, 10:48, 19:5, Romans 6:4, Colossians 2:12.

            Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

            Acts 8:16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)

            Acts 10:48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

            Acts 19:5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

            Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

            Colossians 2:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

            2 Timothy 2:11 It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him:

Name of the Holy Ghost.

            Baptised with the Holy Ghost. Mark 1:8, Acts 1:5,

            Mark 1:8  I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

            Acts 1:5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

First works is complete

            Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe (obey) all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
