A SIGN IS GIVEN #2

Text: Matthew 12:38-40 Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.

39 But he answered and said unto them. An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas.

40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Events before the crucifixion

Jesus wanted out. Let this cup pass from me.

            Jesus is betrayed and arrested.

Peter cut off the ear of the high priests servant.

Jesus is taken to Caiaphas the high priest.

            False witnesses are heard.

Jesus does not respond to the witnesses.

Jesus is asked if he is the Christ, the son of God.

            Jesus answers that he is.

Jesus is found guilty of blasphemy.

            Peter denies Jesus three times.

            Jesus is taken to Pilate.

Judas repents and returned the thirty pieces of silver.

The chief council took the silver and bought the potters field. This was used to bury strangers in.

Jesus didn't answer accusations before Pilate.

Barabbas is chosen to be released instead of Jesus.

Pilate's wife tells of her dream.

Pilate gives in to the people washes his hands and consents to the crucifixion of Jesus.

Pilate scourges Jesus (by his stripes we are healed).

            The soldiers of the government stripped Jesus of his clothes and put a scarlet robe on him, a crown of thorns and a reed in his right hand. They bowed their knee to him, spit on him, took the reed, smote him and mocked him saying; hail Jesus king of the Jews;

The soldiers removed the clothing and put his own clouths on him. They led him away to be crucified.

Simon is compelled to carry the cross.

Jesus is offered vinegar mixed with gall. He refuses it when he tasted it.

Events at the crucifixion

            Jesus is crucified.

They parted his garments and cast lots for his vesture.

            Jesus provides for his mother.

They put a sign over him saying THIS IS JESUS KING OF THE JEWS.

One of the thieves asked Jesus for forgiveness.

Two thieves were crucified with him, one on each side.

Jesus said; Father forgive them for they know not what they do.

Jesus is mocked; if you can build the temple in three days, save yourself, come down off the cross.

The elders said; he saved others, he cannot save himself.

            The thieves mocked him also.

From the sixth hour to the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land.

Jesus cries MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAST THOU FORSAKEN ME?

The people thought he was calling for Elijah.

Jesus is given vinegar to drink.

Jesus said, it is finished and gives up the ghost.

After his death

The vail was rent from top to the bottom.

            The earth quaked.

            The rocks rent (broke).

Graves were opened. Many bodies of the saints which slept arose.

Graves opened and dead saints arose.  Dead bodies walked into town after his resurrection.

The centurion said; truly this was the son of God.

The legs of the two thieves were broken.

A soldier pierced Jesus side with a spear. Water and blood came out.

Joseph of Arimathaea went to Pilate and begged for the body of Jesus.

Joseph buried Jesus body in his own tomb.

The next day the chief priests and the Pharisees came to Pilate and asked for security to be placed at the tomb so the disciples won't steal the body.

WHAT NEXT?

Luke 24:1-7 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulcher, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.

And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulcher.

And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.

And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:

And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?

He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,

Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.

What if he had not risen?

1 Corinthians 15:17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.

He is raised

1 Corinthians 15:3-8 for I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures.

Isaiah 53:4-12 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? For he was cut off out of the land of the living, for the transgression of my people was he stricken.

And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

And that he was buried and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:

After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.

After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles.

And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.

A visitation from Jesus

Luke 24:36-49 And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

37 But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.

38 And he said unto them, why are ye troubled, and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?

39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

40 And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.

41 And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?

42 And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb.

43 And he took it, and did eat before them.

44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:

47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

48 And ye are witnesses of these things.

49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
