JACOB'S SONS # 4

Text: Genesis 4:1-2 And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the last days.

Zebulun, Issachar, Dan, Gad, Asher and Naphtali

Six sons

Zebulun

13 Zebulun shall dwell at the haven of the sea; and he shall be for an haven of ships; and his border shall be unto Zidon.

Zebulun received his inheritance in Canaan land, it was by the sea. This land was chosen by drawing lots. It wasn't given to fulfill the prophecy of Jacob. This was divine action by God himself. Joshua 19:11.

God appoints the bounds of our habitation. He places us where he needs us for his purpose and will. We need to make use of his direction. If we do it will benefit us and the kingdom of God.

Issachar

14 Issachar is a strong ass couching down between two burdens:

15 And he saw that rest was good, and the land that it was pleasant; and bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant unto tribute.

Issachar: The men of that land were strong and industrious. They were farmers. They produced food that fed not only themselves but many others also. They recognized the value of what God had given them. Theirs was not recognized to be great as others. They saw that rest at home was a great thing. They had peace and comfort. They weren't noticed like some others but they were content with the lant God gave them.

Dan

16 Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel.

17 Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward.

18 I have waited for thy salvation, O Lord.

Dan judged his own tribe. This tribe was great in battle. He surprised his enemies. He was like a snake in the path. His enemies didn't expect him. Thus they were surprised in battle.

This could refer to Samson who was of this tribe and judged Israel and delivered them out of the hands of the Philistines. He didn't fight like others but he was successful by his conniving. He ended up burying them in their own temple of Dagon their God.

Gad

19 Gad, a troop shall overcome him: but he shall overcome at the last.

The word GAD means troop. This tribe was a fighting tribe. They were great warriors. They lost some battles but was victorious at the last.  They persevered.

Asher

20 Out of Asher his bread shall be fat, and he shall yield royal dainties.

The tribe of Asher was rich not only in necessities but also in the finer things of life. They exported to other tribes, but they probably exported to other nations.

Naphtali

21 Naphtali is a hind let loose: he giveth goodly words.

The name Naphtali means wrestling which signifies prevailing. Unlike the ox and the donkey this tribe was like the deer. They were quick to react to situations. The ox and the donkey was study as you go in their labors. They were more like the deer than the lion. The deer runs but the lion stands and fights.

Ruben, lost his birthright

Simeon, cruel, mean

Levi, came to ministry

Judah, like a lion

Zebulun, trader by the sea

Issachar, like a donkey. (Or ox.)

 Dan, like a snake

 Gad, warriors that persevered.

Asher, rich in necessities and finer things of life.

Naphtali, like a deer.

Conclusion

Among God's people there are a variety of talents and gifts. We are different and yet we compliment each other.

God places us in the body as it pleases him for his purpose and pleasure.

.

1 Corinthians 12:27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

            1 Corinthians 12:31

But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

1 Corinthians 12:4-6 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.

And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.

1 Corinthians 12:14-18 For the body is not one member, but many.

15 If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

16 And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

17 If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?

18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.
