PETER THE ROCK

   Text:  John 1:35-42 Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;
36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!
37 And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
38 Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?
39 He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.
40 One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.
41 He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.
42 And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.

            Impulsive. Asked to walk on the water. At the transfiguration he wanted to make three tabernacles.
            Tenderhearted and affectionate. Peter wept after denying Jesus.

             At times presumptuous. Peter rebuked Jesus when he told Peter about his crucifixion.
            At other times timid and cowardly. Peter was afraid because of the boisterous winds. This was when he was walking on the water. Peter denied Jesus three times at his trial.
            Self-sacrificing yet inclined to be self-seeking. Peter left his boat to follow Jesus and yet he sought a position in the future kingdom. Matt. 19:27.
            Gifted with spiritual John6:68 Peter knew Jesus had the words to eternal life.
insight.  Yet slow to apprehend deeper truths. It's the heart not what we eat.
            Made two great confessions of his faith in Christ and also the most cowardly denial. Thou art the Christ two different times.

Six steps in peter's fall
            1. Conceit. Said he wouldn't deny Jesus. He did three times.
            2. Ease. He fell asleep when Jesus needed him most.
            3. Rashness. Cut off the servants ear.
            4. Following afar off. He didn't identify with Jesus.
            5. Evil associations. Peter stood with unbelievers and warmed himself when Jesus was being tried.
            6. Open denial. Peter denied Jesus three times at Jesus trial.

             Mark 4:30-32 And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it?
31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds that be in the earth:
32 But when it is sown, it groweth up, and becometh greater than all herbs, and shooteth out great branches; so that the fowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it.
            Ephesians 4:11-16 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ:
14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
             1 Peter 2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.
            2 Peter 3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever.
