New English Translation
2 Timothy 3:14-17 But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you.
15 You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus.
16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.
17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.
All need to be taught, corrected, and reproved.
We best oppose error by promoting a solid knowledge of the word of truth
The word teaches us what is true.
John 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Mark 13:31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.
Make us realize what is wrong in our lives.
2 Corinthians 13:5 Net Put yourselves to the test to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize regarding yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you--unless, indeed, you fail the test!
The word corrects us when we are wrong.
Hebrews 12: 5 And have you forgotten the exhortation addressed to you as sons?
"My son do not scorn the Lord's discipline or give up when he corrects you.
6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves and chastises every son he accepts."
7 Endure your suffering as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is there that a father does not discipline?
8 But if you do not experience discipline, something all sons have shared in, then you are illegitimate and are not sons.
9 Besides, we have experienced discipline from our earthly fathers and we respected them; shall we not submit ourselves all the more to the Father of spirits and receive life?
10 For they disciplined us for a little while as seemed good to them, but he does so for our benefit, that we may share his holiness.
11 Now all discipline seems painful at the time, not joyful. But later it produces the fruit of peace and righteousness for those trained by it.
Teaches us to do what is right.
WE learn by example. We learn by the word.
Matthew 7:12 a 12 In everything, then, do to others as you would have them do to you. For this is the essence of the law and prophets.
Four things about ourselves
Teach us what is true. Get on the right path.
Make us realize what is wrong in our lives. Shows us when we leave the path.
It corrects us when we are wrong. Shows us how to get back on the path.
Teaches us to do what is right. Shows us how to stay on the path.
