Text: Matt.12:38-40 Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.
39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:
40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Traditional teaching
Traditional teaching for the Easter events says that Jesus was crucified Friday afternoon at three o'clock and he rose Sunday morning at sunrise. Let's take a look at scripter and see what realy happened. First we must look at our text. Jesus said;
40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
A day in scripture is always twelve hours and a night is always twelve hours. Three days (twelve hours each) times three equals thirty six hours. Three nights at twelve hours each equals thirty six hours. When we add days and nights together we get seventy two hours or three complete days.
The traditional time; Friday afternoon until Sunday morning only equals thirty six hours or a day and a half.
Sabbath day
John 19:31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
High day= The original Greek word used for high here is megaluno. The meaning of this Greek word is enlarge, magnify, shew great, might, strong etc.
A high day is technically an annual holy day, or annual Sabbath, as commanded in Leviticus 23. Certainly, the weekly Sabbath is a day to keep holy, but these annual holy days take precedence if they occur on the seventh-day Sabbath. The annual Sabbaths are seven: the first and seventh days of Unleavened Bread,...
The word Sabbath means "the day of weekly repose". No work is allowed on these days.
The traditional day of the crucifixion is the weekly Sabbath. The tradition day of the resurrection is Sunday morning. Let's take a look at scripture.
Matthew 28:1-6 In the end of the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulcher.
2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.
3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:
4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.
5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.
6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
There is a teaching that we won't be saved if we believe the traditional teaching of Easter. No one will be saved if we have to have perfect understanding of all scripture. We are saved by grace, not by knowledge.
The important thing here is that Jesus rose from the dead and because he rose we will rise also at his second coming.
