BAPTISMS

Text:  Hebrews 6:1-3 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
And this will we do, if God permit.

Definition of baptism. To cover wholly with a fluid. To wash.

Baptisms
            1. John's baptism unto repentance.
            2. Baptism into the body of Christ.  (Metaphor).
1 Corinthians 12:13  For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
            3. Baptism in the Holy Ghost.
Luke 3:16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
Acts 2:1-4 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

            4. Baptism in Jesus name.  Early church baptism. The early church baptized in the name of Jesus or Lord Jesus. The bible says we are buried with him.

            5. Baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
Matthew 28:19  Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
This baptism began in the third century a d. There isn't any place in the bible where this form of baptism was used. The bible says we are buried with him, not them.

Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Colossians 2:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

            6. Baptized for the dead.
1 Corinthians 15:29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all?  Why are they then baptized for the dead?
There many ideas about this scripture. The one that seems the most acceptable is that we are baptized because of the one that died for our sins.

            7. Baptize babies. Baptism follows repentance. Repentance is the decision of the person repenting. Babies can't make such a decision.

          8. Baptize by sprinkling. We are buried with him in baptism. Buriring requires complete covering.

Purpose of baptism
A Baptism declares that you are a follower of Jesus Christ. It is a public confession of your faith in, and commitment to, Jesus Christ. It is the next step after salvation through repentance and faith and is an important foundation for the Christian life.
